KTEPM was formed by a decision of the Senate of the University of East Sarajevo in October 2014, and upon fulfillment of the legal requirements for operation, it was constituted in March 2016. The Regulation on the Organization and Work of Departments at the University of East Sarajevo and the decisions of the Senate determine the affiliation, organization, method of establishment, jurisdiction, competence, method of operation, obligations and responsibilities.
KTEPM unites teaching, scientific, associate and scientific research staff in the field of thermal power engineering and process engineering, regardless of which organizational unit they are predominantly engaged in.
The KTEPM is headquartered at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in East Sarajevo. The KTEPM staff is determined at the beginning of each school year and consists of responsible teachers and associates for subjects under the jurisdiction of KTEPM, which are taught at the organizational units of the University of Sarajevo.
The main activity of KTEPM is related to the module Energy Process Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in East Sarajevo. The department is also responsible for KTEPM courses and the selection of appropriate responsible teachers and associates at other organizational units (FPM Trebinje, Faculty of Transport and Communications Doboj, ETF East Sarajevo, Faculty of Pedagogy Bijeljina, Faculty of Technology Zvornik, etc.).
KTEPM provides scientific, professional and personal support to the Center for Thermal Engineering and Process Engineering CETEP at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in East Sarajevo.
